Dolmen and cist burials

Dolmen and cist burials were traditions imported from the eastern Manchurian Basin. Both were taken up with zest, and tens of thousands of dolmens exist across the Korean Peninsula (Figure 11.4); 413 cemeteries containing thousands of megalithic burials have been excavated.33 Early table-types in inland regions tend to be smaller and lack many grave goods; however, later go-board types in the south approach monumental sizes, often with pit or cist burials underneath rich in prestige goods (Figure 11.5). Some areas like the southwestern Peninsula around Kwangju City have multitudes of dolmens, many arranged in linear fashion. The go-board dolmen in Figure 11.4 is one of at least six lined up in a modern paddy field. These dolmens might be related to the emergence of chiefly figures on the southern coast late in the Mumun period.34
